Knowledge on World’s Energy Crisis
Gas prices in the summer of 2008 were a reality. The growing scarcity of non-renewable resources like oil, gas, and coal coupled with an increasing demand for its requirements from the developing nations, our demand will very soon exceed our supply. We take our continuous supply of energy for granted even though we know that it is limited. It is time we took some steps to deal with the imminent energy crisis.
The summer of 2008 made us aware of our capability to make changes to conserve gas, so what are we going to do to conserve power and water? What are the steps to take in conserving power? It is the responsibility of the consumer to conserve the resources of the planet. It is our job not that of the leaders, global or local.
The recent history has seen three other major energy crises besides the gas crisis of 2008 – the 1973 oil crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, and finally the 1990 oil price hike. There have been several other crises too, regionally. Last half a decade has seen an alarming rate of increase in the prices and yet people believe this energy crisis to be a myth.
Is it a myth? Will we see this energy crisis within our lifetime? It is more than a possibility. Are you aware that we have already used up 50% of the world’s available oil? At the rate, we are going; we will use up the remaining 50% too in the next 32 years. Our consumption rate will only move northwards.
According to the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, countries like China and India will increase its usage of oil by over 12 % over the next two decades while the average growth of an industrial nation is just 1 % over the same period.
That kind of increase will have an unbelievable impact as one-third of the globe’s population belongs to these two countries. Our generation is sure to see an energy crisis in this lifetime only.
How is the world’s energy crisis affecting you and your energy use at home? Am important step in this direction would be to recognize our ways of using energy in our lives. Firstly, we should stop taking our resources for granted. Different ways of conserving gas, oil, and electricity should be found. It is important to bring awareness of the crisis among people.
